Idag fyller Robert E Howard år!

Förra veckan uppmärksammade vi Clark Ashton Smiths födelsedag, och den här veckan har turen kommit till en annan Weird Tales-författare, nämligen Robert E Howard. Howard är mest känd som skaparen av den cimmeriske barbaren Conan, men han har även skrivit om en rad andra hjältar som är värda att uppmärksamma. Några exempel på sådana är 1600-talspuritanen Solomon Kane, barbaren Kull av Atlantis, den irländske krigaren Turlogh O'Brien och pikternas siste kung, Bran Mak Morn. Howard skrev också ett antal historiska äventyrsberättelser med starka kvinnliga protagonister; nämligen Agnes de Chastillon och Röda Sonya av Rogatino.

There are two roads to Torkertown. One, the shorter and more direct route, leads across a barren upland moor, and the other, which is much longer, winds its tortuous way in and out among the hummocks and quagmires of the swamps, skirting the low hills to the east. It was a dangerous and tedious trail; so Solomon Kane halted in amazement when a breathless youth from the village he had just left, overtook him and implored him for God's sake to take the swamp road.

The Tower of the Elephant

Torches flared murkily on the revels in the Maul, where the thieves of the east held carnival by night. In the Maul they could carouse and roar as they liked, for honest people shunned the quarters, and watchmen, well paid with stained coins, did not interfere with their sport.
